I had fulfilled my dream of being an artist late in  life.....I got a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1982 at the age of 34,.and began a  career of painting, collage and assemblage art.  But all along it kept occurring to me that the images I did would make very good art quilts.   If only I could SEW! Learning to make an apron in grade 8 was the only experience sewing I had (and didn’t we ALL!)

Kerby Smith

The intriguing thing about fabric art is that it provides both a visual and tactile interaction with the person who is engaged with it.

Biography

Kerby C. Smith has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from Hobart College. For many years the focus of his creative work was in traditional photography, winning awards at various venues in the west. He regularly shows his work at the Chris Sorensen Gallery in Fresno, CA and the Timberline Art Cooperative in Oakhurst, CA. His shift to the fabric arts was heavily influenced by his wife’s work with art quilts and together they wrote Secrets of Digital Quilting From Camera to Quilt. The book was released in February of 2010 by C&T Publishing. He is a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates and currently teaches digital fabric printing at major seminars such as Empty Spools Seminars at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove.

 Averil Stuart-Head

Arrival: 8th August to  departure 15th August 2012

This class is going ahead as scheduled.  There are still vacancies

My work styles and techniques vary and are a mixture of:

textile art/fibre art, mixed media paintings/collage, ceramic sculptures, silk papermaking and felting.

I like to experiment with different photo transfer technique's.

Much of my work includes the process of layering and my satisfaction comes from building up texture. I love that time has marked, peeled, rusted and corroded the surface, similar to the facade of a old painted wall or an old relic, creating an effect that is rich in colour, texture and history.

Through the use of multi-layered techniques, I like to peel back the layers as if going back through the passage of time. This provides contrast and interest and allows the viewer to explore the composition past the immediately obvious central themes.

Now, 2012, I am happy with the style I am developing and I intend to push the boundaries and explore my '6 Step Textile  Artistry Adventure'  procedure more fully.
