| Photo Inspired Art Quilts with Leni Levenson Wiener Arrival August 15th 2012 Departure August 22nd 2012 Deadline for registration is June 6th 2012 *************** This workshop is based on my book Photo-inspired Art Quilts, We will create raw edge machine appliqué fabric collage quilts from photographs. Students can use a pattern from the book or can work from a photo of their own. How wonderful it will be to take photos in the area, which the students would then use to make their artquilts—creating their own souvenir of their quilting retreat. Day one: Instruction will begin with a trip into the surrounding area to take photos, followed by a discussion of how to shoot and/or crop a photo for maximum impact. The day will end with a discussion of each person’s photos, selecting and cropping where necessary, and creating a full sized pattern from the photos. Day two and beyond: Selection of fabrics with an in-depth discussion of color and value followed bya step by step instruction of the process—cutting and placing fabric pieces,securing them, making changes. Students will create their art quilts using a freezer paper cutting method, working from a full scale pattern as a guide. Working one element at a time, pieces are secured using fabric glue until the main components are complete. Background options are explored,and the quilt top is stitched together using free motion sewing. After working on their own with the instructor’s assistance, further instruction on thread painting the details, discussion of special threads with sample threads to play with and finishing options will be done when the group is ready.
