| Build a Book of Italian Memories. with Carol Sloan Arrival Date: 22nd Aug Departure Date: 29th Aug 2012 Registration Deadline is: 13th June 2012 ********* Sulmona, believed to be four centuries older than Rome, is surrounded by the majestic Maiella Mountains. The city is filled with legendary beginnings as well as craftsmen that practice the way their ancestors did – goldsmiths and lace makers to name a few. The region is rich in heritage with such sights as beautiful fresco paintings that adorn the walls. Imagine walking here, having the opportunity to fill your artistic well with these sights. Our week will include visiting these places, sitting with our sketchbooks and penning our thoughts as we seek to find our muse within this village. We will gather mementos from the region as well as learning basic urban sketching techniques. Using these materials along with photos, fabrics and your own words, we will build a one of a kind book of Italian memories. Put together a hand bound journal or artist book as you learn to integrate your personal keepsakes. You will learn how to construct a book using techniques that anyone can master. We will cover ways to add your vintage ephemera, add bits and pieces of lace, trim, fabric & fibers as well as treasured papers that you gather while in Italy. We spend time learning techniques to paint and color the pages of your beautiful book.

This class is packed with great techniques including: Understanding the differences acrylic mediums and which mediums to use when Great ways to include vintage linens and keepsakes that you gather.
Basic construction of a handmade book. Sewing on nontraditional surfaces. Making and painting signatures/book pages collage methods to create beautiful book pages how to utilize papers, fibers, fabrics &/or keepsake items to construct a waterproof book cover machine stitching techniques to attach signatures in to the book three different book binding stitches embellishing the front cover of the book to make it uniquely yours.
How to make the outside of your book waterproof and extremely durable. Whether you use your journal to record your thoughts, do some urban sketching or jot down ideas for your next project.
You will love the techniques that you learn AND go home with a “one of a kind” handmade book that chronicles your Italian adventure!
