Join mixed media artist Carol Owen in an exuberant exploration of altered books. 

This beautiful area of Abruzzo, Italy will be the perfect inspiration for creating a book rich with memories you will treasure forever.
You will use an old book as the vehicle for collage and embellishments. 

Learn many ways to make pockets, perfect for all the daily mementos picked up on travels, such as ticket stubs, postcards, and photos. 

Niches and drawers in your book will protect small treasures. Pop-ups will surprise and enchant you.
You will wind up with an exciting, interactive book that will long remind you of your stay in this wonderful place.

On day 1, we will discuss basic information to get started doing an altered book: choosing books, materials to use (glues and paints), ways to get pattern and backgrounds. We will start learning the many techniques to create pockets (for all those bits and pieces we all collect).

On day 2 we will continue with pockets (I am still discovering new ways to make them. There seems to be no end to the possible variations). We will begin to explore the world of Pop-Ups. I love best the ones that look complicated but are quite simple.

Day 3 will be spent on Pop-Ups, as well as techniques that don’t fit into any specific category, such as using zippers, doors and windows, and layered landscapes (think of the beautiful landscapes around you). We will also start on niches and drawers.

Day 4 and 5 will be used to finish the niches. We will discuss the many ways to do covers for your book.

I will structure each day so there will be plenty of time to work in your books, using the various techniques shown.
